Effective Ways To Improve Quality Of Topsoil

Proper maintenance of a garden largely counts on the caretaker’s capability to better the quality of topsoil. It is eventually the soil which can either make or break a particular piece of land. Therefore, while scrutinizing various samples of topsoil for sale, it is important to critically examine the most essential aspects. The following are some of the elemental considerations you need to keep in mind.

Soil Testing

Testing is the indispensable part of the affair. It is critical to know the nutrient concentration in the soil. There are specific laboratories assigned with the role of testing the soil. Specifically, the soil is tested chiefly for the three most elemental nutrients: phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen. These three play a pivotal role in shaping the base of the soil. Apart from that, the pH of the soil is also tested, along with the presence of organic constituents.

Texture Adjustment

While it certainly takes a certain amount of time, it is possible to alter the texture of the soil. Generally speaking, it is recommended to add organic matter such as leaves into the soil. The assimilation of leaves into the soil can be quickened by the addition of liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen speeds up the decomposition process considerably. It should not take more than a month.

Type of Fertilizers

In order to improve the quality of topsoil the use of fertilizers is irrefutable. At the same time, it is also what makes the soil testing procedure so vital; for it is only after testing that you get to assess the exact ratio of fertilizers to be added. Typically, nitrogen is a must. However, make sure that you add nitrogen separately while determining the correct ratio of phosphorous and potassium.

Importantly, while choosing a fertilizer, it is preferable to opt for the organic fertilizer as it has greater water-holding capacity. While it is certainly costlier than the more conventional fertilizers, the organic kind is a far better prospect, from the perspective of long-term use.

So far as the type of fertilizers is concerned, you can also choose between liquid and granular. The former is particularly celebrated for its rich nutrients; however, its over-dilution demands frequent application. The granular kind, while not claiming frequent application, is also not good with the nutrients.

Soil Type

Generally speaking, the ideal soil is the sandy loam, for the simple reason that it is simpler to work with and also more comfortable to drain. At the same, it is important to note that it should not be too loamy. Clay soil, on the other, is not the best bet as it is heavy and difficult to handle. Besides, it will also feel somewhat wet and slippery. Consequently, it takes more time to warm and dry in the spring season. Silt-soil, found near water-bodies or flooded regions, too is not a very good option.

As mentioned at the outset, soil is the pivotal component of land. At Lawn Turf, you get to avail of the best-quality top soil at highly competent rates.
